Nokia C3-00 Unlocked Cell Phone Review

Taking a slightly different take, the Nokia C3-00 cellphone offers not only a fully dedicated front-mounted QWERTY-style keyboard, but also a small, but highly effective color screen that delivers 262K colors and high-resolution for a small device. This phone operates at 75 to 1375 kbps or fast-enough to support a wide range of messaging and capability.

As you one can see, the Nokia is meant to work with the older Internet 802.11 b/g standards while it offers full texting and messaging modes. More limited that other, newer phones, the Nokia still can offer up to 8 GB of memory through optional cards. Standard memory is 55 MB.

The Nokia is a Series 40 platform and offers software updates through the Nokia Software Updater that you install on your PC. Further, it is fully RDS Radio capable and not only shows you the radio station to which you are listening, but also the artist and music or information type of the radio station. RDS (Radio Directional Service also offers roadway informational services on a sideband of the main frequency, a nice feature).

The Nokia also offers full Bluetooth compatibility so that not only can you use a Bluetooth device with the cellphone, but you can also use its Bluetooth capability to stream music through the device. It is a nice extra.

The Nokia's video capability is a bit more limited than other cellphones on the market as it offers only 2.1 MP camera capture capability, however the camera offers up to 4X zoom as well as a full-screen viewfinder and multiple effects.

In addition, the Nokia C3-00 is compatible with the following standards, MP3, WMA, AAC and eAAC, as well as such audio formats as H.263 and H.264, AVI, MPEG-4 and WMV. Incidentally, MPEG-4 files may be stored as.mpg or.3gp files.

The Nokia also offers instant messaging capability through one of the following Yahoo's Instant Messenger or Microsoft's IM feature or you can use Gtalk or Ovi.

Because it is one of the first smarter phones on the market, many of its features come preloaded such as games and organizational tools such as a calendar and the like. Further, it offers a proprietary Nokia browser while giving you full POP and IMAP mail capabilities.

The Nokia C30-00 isn't the latest and greatest smarter cellphone on the market, but that is its point, it isn't being sold as a smartphone and makes no pretense about it. It just works and what it does, it handles quite well.

How To Get Iphone 4 Repair
If you find yourself getting frustrated because your iPhone is going out of whack, you are not alone. Many people have iPhones that have some glitches in them. The ghost in the machine, if you will. Most people choose to go and get iPhone 4 repair rather than worry about the glitches that they get in the iPhone so that they do not have to pay attention to them. Those who are very busy and do not have time to mess with the iPhone will often complain about these issues and will want to get iPhone 4 repair. They can take it to a place that has this type of service. There is a place in Florida that will be able to fix any type of iPhone or Mac computer.

The same applies for Mac repair. While these computers are known for being top of the line and practically working on their own they are so easy to use, there are some people who experience issues with them. Rather than take it to the Apple store, they can find a place that has this type of service available.

Many who have an iPhone or Mac got it from another person. There is a market for these products second hand and since they last a long time and have relatively few issues, people who get a new product often will find a buyer for the old. Such is the case with the entire second hand market of the Apple products. Because they are great products to begin with, many of those who cannot afford new will go with those that are used. The only problem with this is that the warranty does not usually carry over. So if something goes wrong with one of these products, those who own them have to know where to go. The Mac repair company in Florida will be able to take care of the issues for you.

There are certain things that can go wrong with the iPhone no matter how good a product it is. One of them is the screen. It can get damaged or broken by misuse and this is not usually covered under the warranty. If you break the screen, that does not mean that you have to get an entirely new iPhone. The phone screen can be replaced by a company that employs technicians who are used to working on the Apple products.

The Apple products are very special and many people really like them better than any other product on the market today. There is a great deal of enthusiasm for the iPhone as well as the Mac computers. These products usually cost a bit more money than their non-Apple counterparts, but they are known to work very well, be easy to use and run into very few problems. Those who have Apple products will want to look into getting them fixed instead of just replacing them as this is the most cost effective route to take. If you have an Apple product and need to get it fixed, you can bring it or ship it to a place in Florida that can do this for you.

Top Iphone 4 Accessories
Once you have purchased an iPhone, the possibilities are endless on the types of accessories you can find. Accessories can serve a dual purpose; they not only protect your investment, but also enhance the features of your iPhone. Keep in mind, when you choose accessories for your iPhone, check what models they are compatible with. Look at all series and models listed with the manufacturer information in order to avoid an unnecessary return of the product to the company. In general, the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S can use the same accessories, while the iPhone 3GS may not be compatible, especially with Cases.

1. iPhone Car Charger

One of your first accessory purchases will likely be an iPhone car charger. If you plan to use the gadget often, this is essential for extending battery life while on the go. Car chargers are available that also sync your iPhone while in use. Additionally, customers appreciate the car chargers that function as a music player to listen to your iTunes library during your drive. Chargers for the iPhone with dual USB ports permit charging of multiple devices at once. An iPhone solar charger will collect energy through the solar cells to keep the device charged when outlet power is not available.

2. Covers and Cases for iPhone

One of the requirements when shopping for iPhone 4 covers is to find products which can withstand wear and tear without causing damage to your phone. The best covers will be made of highly durable materials such as rubber, carbon fiber and hard plastic. With iPhone 4s cases and covers you may need to get a new one if you previously owned an iPhone 4. Sprint and Verizon iPhone 4 cases may not fit the iPhone 4s although the phones look seemingly identical.

3. iPhone Docking Station

Docking stations for the iPhone have multiple purposes. Most brands act as chargers while others contain back-up batteries to use while your battery is charging. It also features hands-free viewing of videos and web pages. Many docking stations also come with speakers and an alarm clock.

4. iPhone Charging Case

It is a real pain to replace iPhone batteries An innovative new entry into the accessory market for iPhones is the charging case. Along with many of the other must-have iPhone accessories, the iPhone 4 charging case has multiple purposes. The cases act as an external power source while the shell protects the phone from dirt, dust and damage from scratches and falls.

5. Mini Keyboard for iPhone

Not everyone prefers to type on the virtual keyboard which comes standard on the iPhone. An alternative is to purchase a mini keyboard to work with the device. You can use wireless versions that connect via Bluetooth or a plug and play type. It can be essential for composing long documents or sending lengthy emails.

6. iPhone External Battery

An external battery for the iPhone can be purchased to help give users an option to charge their iPhone battery in case they have no access to a wall or car chargers. You use your existing charger to charge backup batteries. Once ready they become portable chargers. Then, when your cell phone battery starts to die you plug in the backup battery and it will fully charge your iPhone.

7. iPhone Headphones with Mic

Although traditional headsets are commonplace with iPhones, newer models have made them essential to iPhone owners. Along with Bluetooth versions, there are headsets that feature an old-fashioned phone which plugs into the jack of your iPhone.

8. iPhone FM Transmitter

FM transmitters for iPhones are an inexpensive accessory used to play your iTunes library over the speakers of your radio. An empty radio station is found and your iPhone plays through the radio when you’re tuned to the station.

9. Wireless Speakers for iPhone

Wireless speakers use Bluetooth to connect with your iPhone. Set the wireless speakers anywhere within a reasonable distance of your phone and play your music. Wireless speakers provide improved sound quality for your music. Another wireless speaker option for the iPhone are Bluetooth Receivers. These devices transform any Headphone, Headset or Speaker into a wireless headset or speaker with the provided 3.5mm input.

10.iPhone Car Mount

A car mount is not only crucial for listening to music or watching videos; you’ll also need a car mount to use the GPS features of your iPhone. Consumers find it is much easier to follow turn by turn directions or view maps while the iPhone is mounted on the dashboard of the vehicle.

There are hundreds of others iPhone accessories to choose from with more brands and types entering the market regularly. We would love to hear what favorite accessories our readers are using!

Blackberry Bold 9900 Unlocked Phone

Blackberry Bold 9900 Unlocked Phone
There was a time, not too long ago, when the pundits and other assorted prognosticators were predicting doom and gloom for RIM-based devices, simply because they were not open and their operating system was old, however, Apple has dispelled that notion not only with new versions of its own operating system iOS for its iPhone series, but with applications that let the iPhone work with Android applications as well as Microsoft apps.

That is exactly the same situation at Research in Motion, maker of the Blackberry series of smartphones such as the RIM Blackberry Bold 9900. For starters, the manufacturer has aimed this directly at the AT+T and T-Mobile market by allowing it to work in 3G mode, at a minimum. With changes that are likely to come in later versions of the RIM Blackberry operating system (now 10), it is likely that the Bold 9900 will be offering WiFi a/b/g/n capabilities, as well as hotspot ability.

And improvements in the operating system have not only expanded its Bluetooth ability but also its ability to make full use of Bluetooth devices for streaming audio. Bluetooth is another method of using and addressing great sound capability. It is made for more than just earpieces and messaging devices.

That the 9900 has been thoroughly enhanced can be shown by one feature, voice activation. As the operating system and electronics packages have been upgraded, the 9900 offers voice-activation of any of the many applications that have been written to work under the Blackberry operating system.

The key to the Blackberry operating system, like iOS, is that RIM is stepping beyond just its own hardware and is offering a series of applications that let a user have access to offerings from Apple or from Pandora or from Microsoft. That means one has quite a variety of software from which to choose and use.

Further, the 9900 boasts a new liquid-style capacitive touchscreen so that you have the option of not only using the full QWERTY-style keyboard with which the 9900 comes equipped, but you also have access to nearly 16 million color combinations from the nearly 3-inch display screen that sits neatly atop the keyboard. Indeed, the built-in keyboard is a great feature if you are into texting or sending and receiving corporate or personal email as Bold offers an application that works with Microsoft's Exchange server. The upgrades to the 9900 and its operating system are likely to offer not only mail through RIM's own system, but, if you look closely at the applications that are available, you will likely find there is now an iOS-compatible mail application.

Using the keyboard and your thumbs, you will find that it is easier and quicker to prepare and send an email or text than it is when you have to not only have to dedicate part of your screen (if your smartphone has a larger screen, in the first place) then you have to lose part of your screen to the keyboard and you will likely find that you have to use a stylus to write your email. The QWERTY-style keyboard, on the other hand, is there and all you have to do is thumb your email or text and send it. It is far easier and quicker to work with.

Another change you will find is that the 9900 offers a menu-style pushbutton that not only allows you to navigate the screen, but you can also use it to access an application. Earlier Blackberry models used a button-like device on the side not only to navigate but also to advocate an application by just pressing the button.

Finally, the Bold 9900 offers full GPS and mapping capability.

Altogether, the BlackBerry Bold 9900 is a good device. As an upgrade, it shows that there is still room on the market for proprietary devices. All it takes is the proper application, especially if they are developed by the company so you know they work correctly from the start with no problems.

Blackberry Bold 9780 Unlocked Cell Phone

Sunday, November 25, 2012

Blackberry Bold 9780 Unlocked Cell Phone
As if to underscore the importance of the standard QWERTY-style keyboard, RIM has produced a line of Blackberry smartphones that not only feature a touch-screen that is quite capable in its own right, but also a real keyboard, instead of trying to share a touchscreen with a keyboard.

The Blackberry Bold 9780, a mid-range smartphone that offers users a line of Research In Motion (RIM) - produced or backed applications that are tested quite thoroughly, is also a particularly useful piece of smartphone equipment because of the QWERTY-style keyboard.

No, it isn't the type of keyboard that you can use to touch-type a long email, story or memo, but it is the style of keyboard that, like the clamshell Sanyo and Samsung's with which we are very familiar, make it far easier to thumb messages. With touch-screen-based keyboards, you either end up squishing the daylights out of your screen as it begins to lose its sensitivity or you use a stylus which can also slow things down.

A real-keyboard, on the other hand, is there. It is meant to take the abuse handed out to a keyboard and it is surprisingly quick.

That the 9780 has this type of keyboard illustrates that at least one major manufacturer believes in the future of the keyboard and its utility. Further, since it is actually a smartphone, the Blackberry Bold 9780, has quite a bunch of applications that have been approved for use with the newer RIM Operating Systems such as 6.0. RIM standard for Research in Motion and they manufacturer the Bold.

The Bold has a number of features, including talk time that approaches six hours or better, if you aren't tied into a charger with the right interface/charger cable. If you are, then the state of your battery is the limit.

The 9790 is meant to work with both quad-band services in the 800 to 2100 MHz bands. Those services include the GSM, EDGE, GPRS, HSPDA and the like. No, it won't work with CDMA devices, but then again, like its more expensive cousins, it also offers not only standard wireless service, but also WiFi service.

Acting in standard phone or text mode, the 9780 is quite a smart device and when you add the 5 MP rearward facing camera and its automatic capability, you find you have a very good device on your hands. However, when you add in WiFi capability you have just doubled the utility of the device as it not only can deliver your messages and calls via standard cell means, but you can also use WiFi to get your messages through. Indeed, if your home network understands Bluetooth, you will be able to not only use the Bluetooth capability of the high-contrast, color, you will be able to interface Bluetooth service capability across your home network. It is a nice feature that not only gives you reasonable range with the Bluetooth, but you can also use it to help stream sound and other featured apps.

At 4.3 by 0.6 by 2.3 inches and 4.3 ounces, it is a lightweight smartphone with a lot going for it. It is true the keyboard may seem superfluous at first, but give it a chance and you'll see that it really does grow on you.

Text Spamming Invades Your Cell Phone

Text Spamming Invades Your Cell Phone
Is there nothing sacred? Do you get unwanted and annoying text messages that are really just spam? Mobile spamming is the latest invasion of your privacy, promising cheap mortgages, credit cards and drugs. In an article written by Nicole Perlroth, NY Times Business Day Technology, “In the United States, consumers received roughly 4.5 billion spam texts last year, more than double the 2.2 billion received in 2009, according to Ferris Research, a market research firm that tracks spam.”

“Unsolicited text messaging is a pervasive problem,” said Christine Todaro, a lawyer with the Federal Trade Commission, the consumer watchdog agency, which is turning to the courts for help. “It is becoming very difficult to track down who is sending the spam. We encourage consumers to file complaints, which helps us track down the spammers, but even then it is a little bit like peeling back an onion.”

Have you inadvertently clicked into an unwanted subscription? While most of the subscriptions are harmless, there are some fraudulent, impossible-to-cancel services that are really annoying. Often by texting back “Stop” you are only confirming that it is a real phone number, and you are now stuck with the increasingly invasive text messages. Your best course of action is to just ignore them, or turn them over to the FTC watchdog agency rather than responding to them. According to Perlroth’s article, “Mobile spam is illegal under two federal laws — the 2003 Can Spam Act and the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, which set up the Do Not Call Registry in 2003. Smartphone users can report numbers that spam comes from on both the Web sites of the F.T.C. and the Federal Communications Commission. The major wireless carriers — AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Bell Mobility and Verizon Wireless — all also offer ways to report the numbers on their Web sites and can block numbers. A number of apps for Android phones also promise enhanced spam text filtering.”

Answering text spams can give access to your personal information, causing possible identity theft. Text spam that tries to get you to reveal personal information is similar to the emails known as phishing. The new mobile version is called “smishing.” In addition, these same text spams may be costing you money if you don’t have unlimited texting on your phone.

Do these spam texts wake you up? If you are like me, my cell phone makes an announcement alert when I get a text message. To avoid being awakened in the middle of the night, I now have to choose to turn off the alerts, or put my phone on silent mode, thus missing any emergency calls I might receive. Argh*%@!!

Legal remedies are beginning to surface. Verizon has brought 20 lawsuits against spammers recently. According to Perlroth’s article, “The F.T.C. tried its first mobile spam case in February 2011 against Phillip A. Flora of Huntington Beach, Calif., accusing him of sending more than five million text messages over a 40-day period at a “mind-boggling” rate of 85 a minute, according to court documents.” Mr. Flora said he charged $300 for every 100,000 text messages he sent. (No wonder he spams. That’s $15,000.) Mr. Flora was also selling the phone numbers to third parties for additional cash. Mr. Flora settled the charges for $32,000 and agreed to cease sending spam texts.

Unfortunately there is no easy solution. Make a list of the spammers numbers and turn them into your cell phone service provider. You can also turn them in to the FTC. But other than that, you are just kind of stuck with them.

Palm Pixi Plus Gsm With Webos Touch Screen 2 Mp Camera And Wi-fi

Tuesday, November 13, 2012

Palm Pixi Plus Gsm With Webos Touch Screen 2 Mp Camera And Wi-fi
At one time, Palm was "the" name in the handheld market and while it was not strictly a phone, it could be synchronized with your desktop computer so that one could receive and place emails, although phone calls were out of the question but that has changed now as Palm has joined the ranks for those offering AT&T's GSM WiFi phone service.

In the mid- to late-1990s, the name Palm and its operating system were the powerhouses in the handheld market. With the right dock hooked to your desktop and the right software, one could send and receive emails, as well as text. One could also create documents and, if your PC had a mailing system and could use the Microsoft Mail Exchange server, one could mail those documents to another user who could then sync his or her Palm device and take the document along in their Palm handheld.

Now Palm has entered the Internet phone market with its Pixi Plus, a very reasonably priced and sized Internet-based phone that gives one access to the entire AT&T GSM/EDGE/GPRS quad-band phone spectrum at 850, 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz and its UMTS/HSDPA dual-band service at 850 and 1900 MHz. This spectrum will not work with CDMA-based networks offered by Verizon, Sprint or Alltel.

Like Blackberrys, one of the features that users who like real keyboards will find an attraction is its full, front-mounted QWERTY-style keyboard. Using this backlighted keyboard, one can easily send text messages or email messages quite quickly, while touchscreen-based keyboards can be very slow if you must use a stylus to generate the message. The keyboard is also compatible with the social media sites Facebook, Google and Linked-In

The Pixi is a surprisingly good phone at an attractive price. It's about average-sized at 4.37 by 0.43 by 2.17 inches, weighing a total of 3.2 ounces. Don't let its size and weight fool you, the Pixi offers you talk time of about five-and-a-half hours before it needs a trip to the charging cable.

Its high-contrast color display is about two-and-a-half inches and can act as a touchscreen, if necessary as can all small phones. That display unlocks the world of AT&T's 20,000-plus national hotspots to you as this is a WiFi 802.11 phone. This makes the Pixi compatible with AT&T's Navigator GPS system that gives you turn-by-turn directions to a site.

The Pixi can be equipped with up to 8 GB of internal memory and features a 2 MP camera/camcorder. Given the number of applications that are built in to the Pixi, you will find that you have more internal memory available for video or images than you think. Remember, though, that the 2 MP camera is good for home snaps or quick shots. It is not meant for high resolution video (usually a 3.2 MP camera is best for home photography as this is roughly 640 by 480 - VGA standard - and shows up best on other camera or computer systems). Still, a 2 MP automatic camera/camcorder - a device that allows you to take videos - is a nice addition, especially when you can use the entire screen as the viewfinder for the Pixi.

Finally, the Palm Pixi shows that Bluetooth is for more than just answering a headset/phone or pairing with your vehicle's phone system, you can use it to stream audio. Bluetooth operates in a specific range of frequencies and since it is an RF-based system, you can take any audio source to which you might happen to be listening, such as an audio service, and then allows you to stream the audio through another, remote Bluetooth device. It is a nice feature that rounds out a a very nice offering at a price that won't break the bank but which will still work well.

Top Reasons To Buy An Unlocked Phone
Freedom of mobility is always the best option

If you are on the market for a new mobile phone because you want an upgrade, your current contract has run out, or even if you want to continue on a no-plan contract, then an unlocked phone is your best option.

More and more people are opting for an unlocked phone over the locked alternative because of the freedom it offers, as well as many of the benefits for the user. If you are considering an unlocked mobile, here are a few reasons that should sway you:

1. You can buy any phone you want, whether it is an iPhone, Blackberry, Samsung or any other phone. All different types of mobile phones are available, which is something that carriers can’t always offer with their plans.

2. You don’t suffer any roaming charges. For example, if you are overseas, you don’t have to worry about the high carrier roaming charges, due to the fact that you are paying as you go.

3. The simplicity of an unlocked mobile phone is that you don’t need to wait for your contract to be up – instead, you can buy a new phone whenever you want to, without being secured into a new one or two year contract.

Unlocked phones are readily available from many online stores. However, the freedom they provide comes at a cost: they are more expensive than if you were to buy it on a contract. Regardless, you cannot overlook the great benefits of buying an unlocked phone.

Secure your freedom and take advantage of the many benefits today.

Expert Witness Corner: Prevention Of Phone Hacking

Expert Witness Corner: Prevention Of Phone Hacking
Due to the "Phone Hacking Scandal" making headlines in the U.K, it became immediately apparent how many phone users do not implement the protection required to prevent the hacking techniques used in this illegal activity.

The method employed to access the data was by simply accessing the unprotected voicemail of the victims from a third party phone handset.

By default there is either no pin or a simple default pin (0000 or 1234) associated to the voicemail account, this allowed for the unauthorised access.

Set out below are the required methods for activating the personalised PIN protection for the voicemail:

Orange:

Orange implements security measures which include text alerts to let you know when a voicemail PIN has been set up or changed.

Remote access to voicemail is switched off by default so you'll need a verified PIN to get into it from the offset.

In order to change your Orange PIN code, you'll need to follow these steps:

1. Press and hold 1 to access your Answer Phone menu.

2. Press 3 for settings and features.
3. Press 3 to set your PIN. This needs to be between four and ten digits long and you'll be prevented from entering obvious codes like 1111 or 1234.

O2:

O2 requires a personalised PIN code from the offset.

In order to change your O2 PIN code you'll need to do the following:

1. Dial 901

2. Press * for greetings and mailbox settings and then 4
3. Follow the prompts

Vodafone:

In order to set to set or change your Vodafone voicemail PIN you'll need to do the following:

1. Call 121 SEND and wait for the main menu:

2. Press 4 then 2 to access the security settings
3. You'll then be offered a range of options to change the security settings including the security level and changing your current PIN. Security codes can be any four-digit number, but repeated or sequential numbers (such as 1111, 1234 or 4321) won't be accepted.

Three:

Three's voicemail can't be accessed using a default passcode and the brand highlights the importance of choosing a PIN that isn't too easy to guess.

In order to change your Three PIN, follow these steps:

1. Dial 123 on your Three phone to access your voicemail

2. Select option 4 to change your mail settings
3. Select option 2 to manage your log-in options
4. Select option 1 to change your PIN
5. Enter your new PIN followed by #. Your PIN code must be between four and eight characters long and different from your previous PIN.

T-Mobile:

To set up or change your PIN code for your T-Mobile voicemail, you'll need to:

1. Access your voicemail as normal

2. Select option 2 then 1
3. Enter a four-digit PIN of your choice, then press #.

Tesco Mobile:

According to the Tesco Mobile website, the network's voicemail service has a default PIN code of 8705.

To change your Tesco Mobile PIN, here's what you need to do:

1. Call 905 from your mobile

2. Press the * key
3. Select option four from the main menu options4. Follow the prompts.

Virgin Mobile:

For Virgin Mobile, the process for setting your PIN number varies depending on the handset. There is a default code, although it's only given to customers who require it.

In order to change your PIN, Virgin Mobile told us that you should:

1. Dial 222 from handset to set up voicemail

2. If already set up, hold down 1 on handset to enter voicemail
3. Enter current PIN
4. Follow voice prompts to change settings (including PIN)

How To Get The Best Mobile Phone Deal
When it comes to our mobile phones most of us spend too much money; or at very least a lot more than we need. I’m sure you know plenty of people who run through new phones like there’s no tomorrow and it’s easy to get swept up in the draw of new shiny phones that are released each year. However, if you want to cut back slightly on your mobile phone use and your costs then it’s fairly easy to get a great deal. Even if you want to spend lots of money on your phone there are plenty of places you can cut a few corners and here we’ll take a look at some of the best places to shave a few extra pounds off your monthly bill.

The phone

Ok, with most new contracts your phone is actually the most expensive thing you’ll end up paying for. You seldom really get a free phone and most of the time you’ll pay a lot more for a contract if you want to get a really good or new phone. The new iPhone 4s for example has contracts that are at least £10 more expensive a month than the old iPhones or in fact any other smartphone. Generally the newest model smartphones are the most expensive and a mobile phone deal will reflect this very much. If you can pick up a second hand mobile then you will save a lot of money just getting a SIM card only deal but the best option is to plump for a slightly older phone; after all there will be a new model out next year anyway!

Your Limits and Usage

How much you will actually use the phone is just as important as the phone itself and understanding your limits and use will mean you can get a phone contract that is perfectly attuned to how much money you need to spend. Most existing phone companies now have online tools you can use to track how many of your minutes you use and how many texts and how much internet you get through a month. If you work out your rough averages then add 10% you will know exactly how much of each data type you need and will be able to ensure that you get a contract that fits in with that. It’s great having unlimited texts etc. but it is completely unnecessary for most phone users.

The contract

The most overlooked part of mobile phone deals by consumers is the contract itself. Before you sign anything (or as soon as you receive your contract) check to see what excess charges will be, what happens if you decide to cancel your contract, whether you are entitled to a replacement phone or an “upgrade” and make sure that you won’t encounter any hidden costs. Most mobile phone contracts are now standardised to a degree but if you’re not happy with it simply cancel it. It’s a little too easy to think you’ve got a great deal only to find a 24month contract with extra fees if you cancel or do anything!

If you follow all these steps you should end up with a very good phone deal that is perfectly tailored to what you will actually use and need!

Game Changer Or Just Another Smartphone?

Iphone 5 Game Changer Or Just Another Smartphone?
For many, the battle for best smartphone will be a never-ending one. Some have settled that once and for all the enemy's flag has been captured and securely remains in the Samsung camp with the Galaxy SIII as the victor. However, countless others have placed their bets, and even their 24 month contract costs, on the newest edition to Apple's line: the iPhone 5. Admittedly that comes mostly from those possessing older model iPhones, but for those already in possession of the latest Samsung, HTC, Blackberry, Motorola or "old" iPhone 4S, you might be wondering if all the hype is worth you buying into the fruity company's latest offering.

The reasons to buy a new phone are no longer those of the past. Let's face it, a smartphone is a smartphone. We want our multiple email accounts pushed to our pockets. Take more than decent photos that will rival a budget Nikon DSLR (and HD video to boot!). Surfing the Web and downloading content at the speed of light are a given. Most importantly, though, we want to check our Facebook and other social media updates at a slide of a finger on the smoothest, most intuitive screen possible this side of Tony Stark's "touch air" technology present in Jarvis. The iPhone 5 of course does this and much more. As true as that may be, there are still a number of real reasons we convince ourselves of a new £500 gadget ("because my old one is now inferior") despite only being, sometimes, just a few months old. And why shouldn't we? We work hard and deserve to treat ourselves every once in a while, right? Right!

So let's look at it. On the surface, if you're after a massive 4 inch, 16:9 aspect ratio, super bright, crystal clear screen then look no further. You'll be hard pressed to find such luxury within the HxWxD measurements of 123x58x19mm whilst weighing in at a mere 112 grams. Yes, it's not the largest screen, but it's not trying to be. Compared with the iPhone 4S, the weight-loss is welcomed by most - dropping a humongous 28g, something not to be snubbed at as many a boot camp attendee will attest to. And yes, although the larger screen carries with it a new can of issues, namely when it comes to apps designed for the thus far 3.5 inch platform Apple decided to stick with for the past 5 years, let's face it, we're not that bothered about playing the same old faithful Angry Birds with a black border if it means we get true wide-screen when watching movies or viewing panoramic photos shot by ourselves or talented others via Flickr or the like as they were designed to be viewed.

Not yet sold? Okay. When it comes to the innards of the beast, no penny has been spared on giving Apple users the best performance upgrade. Yes, the competition has done extremely well with a dual and even a quad-core processor at the heart of their smartphones. Yes, multitasking, graphic detail, video playback and all things performance and battery draining do well in handling the demands of the smartphone user. That said, the newest edition to the Apple family is the A6 processing chip running at super-fast 1.3GHz. Despite being more compact than the dual-core A5, it boasts superior performance meaning the smaller battery (but still a respectable 1434 mAh) provides over 40 hours of music playback, 10 hours video playback, or 8 hours talk-time. With CPU tasks operating twice as fast as the iPhone 4S along with twice the graphics performance, it's clear that on paper at least, the iPhone 5 is twice the phone its predecessor is. That said, real-time tests prove that the older phone lasts just as long on a single charge, but it's the way it lasts that makes the newer phone stand out.

So, great camera, great Wi-Fi, super-fast multitasking, 4G capable, super-model slim. Sold? Maybe.

I guess when push comes to shove; there won't actually be a real reason to buy the new iPhone. Game changer? No. Game modifier? Definitely, at least for those already in possession of the 4S. The iPhone 5 shows us what we've been missing out on with previous smartphones if your phone is older than 8 months. If you already have the latest pièce de résistance from the competition, then you've essentially already made your intentions and opinions known. In reality, there's not much that the iPhone 5 will provide other than the fact that you can say you have an iPhone 5 - but that's surely the point of the battle isn't it? Victory is in the mind of the user, and using the iPhone 5 makes you feel like you are the hottest thing since the invention of the wheel. Indeed, the iPhone 5 will keep you and your admirers' heads spinning happily just long enough until the 5S is released. The modifications made in the production of this version of the iPhone have surely meant that the comparisons between Apple and the competition, as well as the accompanying spec sheets are becoming more meaningless with each passing generation. You have to play with it to be sold on it or equally true, been coveting moving over to the "Apple Side" for a long while and finally decided to be brave enough to switch. So when it has all been said and done, happy purchasing whatever you're buying, and see you in 6 months!

Iphone Software Update: Is Ios V6 Worth It?

Wednesday, October 3, 2012

Iphone Software Update: Is Ios V6 Worth It?
Whether you are looking to purchase the new iPhone 5 or simply update your “old” 4S, the question remains whether iOS 6 is going to be worth changing from iOS 5. With Apple boasting an impressive 200+ improvements to the operating system, it's clear that bigger and better hardware was not the only thing on their mind when releasing the iPhone 5. Offering the software updates to all previous models post the iPhone 3, it's clear that this production is one to take very seriously and Apple have clearly been putting their customers' interests at heart. However, it's not all rose petals in the Apple garden, and many device users will be struck with frustration over the lack of full integration with iOS 6 features depending on what platform they are using.

One of the the great improvements iOS 6 brings is the new Maps app. Gone are the designs from Google, and in are the ones from Apple with its own in-house styling crew. Available on Android for years, iOS users have up until now not had turn-by-turn navigation support on Maps for iOS. Well, they do now! Another newcomer is something Apple calls "Flyover", giving users a 3-D bird's eye view of any location using satellite imagery, zooming in and out at will for a true city experience.

However, the update doesn't come without its downsides. Unlike the older Maps, you no longer get the new Map transit directions. You'll have to download (and pay for the most part) transit route apps from the Apple App Store. And to date, nothing has been developed that is compatible with the new Maps format, so lose-lose situation. Duh! Also, still lagging behind Android, the new app also lacks anything remotely similar to Google's Street View where one can see street-level photographs of specific places/landmarks. These go a long way in helping identify your exact intended destination or some random navigation end point not so desirable as is sometimes the case with route planning.

Besides Maps, iOS 6 brings communications with loved ones closer than ever. Users can share their photos with friends and family members via Apple's servers. Those with newer iOS devices (phones, tablets or Macs) can see the shared photos in their respective Gallery app. If you're not on iOS, you can still view shared content on a dedicated web page. So, unlike posting pictures on your favourite social networking site be it Facebook, or Flickr or other, there's no need to filter those who can and can't see it, you simply share directly with those who you want to view them.

An update of iOS wouldn't be complete without an update to iTunes and the Apple Store. Not only do they run faster than before, but multitasking is now supported. Of course Android has allowed users to download an app and remain in the store to browse for something else to buy for years, but this is now possible on iOS. “Thanks Apple”. You can also, for example, now preview a song in iTunes and continue listening to it whilst switching pages or browsing other album tracks. Nifty!

Siri has been revamped on a huge scale. You now get cinema times and reviews, OpenTable reservations along with Yelp information. Coupled with app launching abilities and the option of posting updates to social networking accounts Facebook and Twitter, Siri is awesome. Although Siri is only compatible from 4S users and above, it's clear that Siri is still not yet a “one for the masses” feature (sorry if you're a iPhone 4 or 3G user and want Siri!).

One feature that is new and definitely worthwhile is Passbook. The virtual card holder app carries your gift cards, discount vouchers, tickets and much more all in one place and can be set to appear in the notifications screen when you're at the place and time to use/redeem them. The scope for businesses to exploit its uses are limitless, with numerous companies wanting to take advantage of the system for advertising and marketing purposes, which, if done correctly wouldn't be too bad of an idea if it means getting what's rightfully yours because you left the Nectar Card at home, or left your Starbucks loyalty card in the office and you're buying 20 lattes.

Along with “Do Not Disturb”, “iPad Clock”, “VIP email”, “FaceTime”, Facebook integration, and a lot more besides, there's a lot iOS 6 brings to the table. Most simple of all updates, however, and yet one that's notably welcomed, is the somewhat mundane improvements to basic call related options. Yes, we do use the phone for calling as well! On a incoming call, you can now reject a call using a user created message or choose from Apple’s default, as well as respond with an outgoing text or iMessage note, divert calls to voicemail or ask for a reminder. Wow, what a choice. It's about time Apple thought a bit more carefully how users actually use their phones when trying to avoid certain calls without being rude.

Lastly, its fair to say that although some of the above features will not be available on 3G and 4 handsets, and original iPad and iPad 2 owners will suffer their fair share of update let-downs, if you're an iPhone 4S user there's only everything to gain from updating your software. Time will tell if iOS 6 isn't right for you.
